Boasting, Fasting and Lent

On February 26th, we move into the Lenten Season. Many Christians will fast for the 40 days of Lent. Then many will want to tell their friends and family what they doing for Lent and what they are giving up or fasting from. But is this human desire to share this news Biblically based.

No it’s not.

Matthew 6:16-18 tells us to keep our fast to ourselves, and let it only be known to the Father:

“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

There you have it folks, keep your mouths shut and wash your faces. No one needs to know what you’re giving up for Lent or that you’re fasting at all. This scripture is a lesson to us not only about fasting, but about so many other things that only our Father needs to know.
