Albert Einstein knew my old church would fail

Moyock Christian Fellowship was formed by a small group that split from a local United Methodist Church with grave stewardship issues. As the church drifted into insolvency for the third time in a little more than a decade, we saw no future in an organization stuck in a repetitive cycle of failure.

In our groups discussions with the district superintendent and conference bishop it became clear that there was no focus on saving the church. What was clear, is that the church would indeed fail again. In a meeting with one of the members of the church council, I was told that “the church as been through this before.” That comment struck me as odd, because you would think that after going down that trail twice before and now again, they would be tired of cycle.

This morning while reading an article on the Wesleyan Covenant Association website, I cam across this quote from Albert Einstein:

Einstein’s definition of insanity is “to continue to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”

So Einstein had predicted the cycle of failure at our old church. Sadly, long before ever reading this quote, our small group predicted the same … over and over again at church council meetings we warned of this to no avail. There’s another quote that applies here as well: “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.”

It was repeated.
