Serving God by Serving Others

By Brother Thom

Serving God by Serving Others is far more than a catchy phrase, it’s at the very foundation of Christianity. Galations 6:10 says “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Serving others is illustrated by Jesus Christ throughout the New Testament. John 13 tells the story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples following the last supper. If you’re unfamiliar with this story, you can read it here. It’s possibly one of the greatest examples of serving others we may come across.

Often Christians are the only Bible some around them will ever read. That means our Christ like action is a beacon to those around us. What others see in us is important in so many ways. In being a Christian “out in the open,” meaning we’re not hiding our Christianity, but openly celebrating it, others can see us a normal people. The myth that we’re hiding behind the walls of the church damning everyone not inside the walls to hell is broken. We have families, homes, occupations of every kind, we shop at Walmart and get our cars repaired just like everyone else. We also have problems like everyone else and we’re sinners like everyone else. What makes us different is our deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

What also makes us different is our willingness to do for others sometimes at our own expense in terms of time, resources, spiritual gifts and money. Serving others has rewards of the heart that literally can’t be put into words. You have to experience it. Serving others expecting nothing in return is always rewarded by the Lord ten fold. We don’t ask for reward, and we certainly don’t expect it, but God deposits his love directly in our hearts every time.

So what can you do to serve others, the opportunities are limitless and often require little effort. Being kind to others, assisting others, looking out for others, doing for others and being available to others. Sometimes the most wonderful thing you can do for others, is to pray for others.

And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.” Luke 6:31
